Why AI Skips 50% of Local Businesses & How to Fix This

Here is a stat worth sitting with: in a new study, roughly half of local businesses were never recommended by AI, even when the model was handed the complete, verified list of every real business in the area.

The businesses were right there in the options, and LLMs or AI still left them out.

If you run a dental office, law practice, contracting business, med spa, preschool, or any local company trying to turn ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI into calls and bookings, this one matters.

And there is a fairly simple fix.

What The Study Actually Did

Researchers tested local recommendations across 304 neighborhoods in Boston, New York, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco, using GPT-4o-mini, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and Meta’s Llama 3.3, across 320 different customer profiles.

First, they let the models recommend restaurants freely, and the models both invented places that did not exist and skipped large numbers of real ones.

So, they ran it again, this time handing each model a verified list of 100 real restaurants and asking it to pick 10. No guessing, no inventing, complete information.

And even then, 47.5% of the real restaurants were never recommended, with almost a third of those ignored by all three models at once.

What Moved A Business From Available To Recommended

Getting into the database is only the beginning. The models still need a reason to move you from an available option into the actual answer, and the study reveals what earns that.

Businesses with more real-world visits, more reviews, and a stronger public footprint were consistently more likely to be recommended.

Publishing competitor comparison is another way to build the kind of public evidence AI systems often rely on.

Here is the important part: the Yelp rating itself did not have a significant relationship with visibility.

The volume of public discussion did. A 4.9 with 17 reviews looks great to the owner, but a competitor with hundreds of reviews, local articles, directory listings, customer photos, and detailed service pages simply gives the AI more evidence that

  • the business exists,
  • that people go there, and
  • what it is good at.

The Fix Is To Become Hard To Ignore

The move is to surround your business with consistent, verifiable evidence. Bringing more relevant visitors to your website also helps strengthen your overall online presence over time. Your website should spell out every service you offer and exactly where you operate. Your name, address, phone, hours, booking links, and categories should match everywhere they appear.

Your presence should extend across the directories, local publications, and industry sites that customers and AI both trust. And your pages should answer the real questions people ask before they choose. Businesses that consistently publish useful, search-focused content also give AI more context to understand what they offer.

  • A dentist needs pages on procedures, insurance accepted, emergency and Saturday availability, financing, and anxious patients.
  • A contractor needs the projects done, service area, licensing, warranties, and how estimates work. The same logic fits a preschool, a med spa, an attorney, or a restaurant.

Why This Fix Compounds

This is why local SEO and AI search visibility are really one strategy now. The same signals that help a customer find and trust you on Google give the AI better information too, and it feeds on itself: stronger visibility earns more recommendations, which bring more customers, more visits, and more reviews, which make you even easier to recommend next time.

A local company can exist, have wonderful reviews, and even sit inside the AI’s list of options while still being cut from the final answer.

Being hard to ignore is what tips it.

The Bottom Line

AI recommendations are already part of how people pick where to eat, who to hire, and which dentist to trust. The businesses that win are not always the highest rated, they are the ones with the most public evidence behind them.
